Water Usage

Goal

Goal

Reduce water usage at all global production sites by 20% vs. FY2015 result as of FY2024*.

  • *Applies to production sites with high water risks as well.

Our Stance

As water usage increases worldwide due to economic development and population growth, there are growing global concerns over water risks.
We are working to reduce water abstraction, with the effective use of water resources as one of the key sustainability issues set out in SF 2030.

FY2021 Overview

Since fiscal 2014, the OMRON Group has kept track of water resource data based on CDP's water program. In fiscal 2017, the Group set environment-related social issues to address, together with the Group's identified sustainability issues and long-term goals. Accordingly, all of its production sites worldwide have been working to make more effective use of water resources.

In fiscal 2021, water withdrawals at all production sites worldwide was down 35% compared with fiscal 2015 as a result of their reduction efforts.

Indonesia Office's Initiatives

Indonesia Office has introduced sensors that detect water leaks and has established a system that can respond promptly by notifying SNS when water leaks occur.
In addition, we are striving to effectively utilize water resources by managing the amount of water spreading to gardens in our business sites through the introduction of an automatic water spreading system.

Initiatives to Recycle Water

In fiscal 2021 April to September, Yasu office recycled 81,000m3 of water, recycling discharged water with 3 methods as follows:

  • Collection and recycle of diluted wastewater
Some discharged water from cleaning process in manufacturing is comparatively clean. Yasu office returns such water back to a manufacturing step ahead of the step that uses ultrapure water.
  • Discharge of water filtered by RO membrane
Yasu office recycles discharged water filtered through Reverse Osmosis Membrane in manufacturing process that uses ultrapure water.
  • Recycle of discharged water from cleaning of iron and manganese removal equipment
At Yasu office, water taken from a well is filtered at equipment for iron and manganese removal. The equipment is cleaned regularly, and the water used at the latter part of the cleaning process, which is rather clean, is recycled.

In addition, Shenzhen plant set a target of reducing water consumption per unit of production in the plating process by 5% per year. Washing water is reused by passing the washing water of nickel electroplating several times. In fiscal 2021, we reduced water consumption per unit of production by 12.8% compared to fiscal 2020 by reusing washing water and changing the size of fountain nozzles.

Addressing Water-related Risks

The OMRON Group assesses and identifies sites with water-related risks by using WRI's Aqueduct, one of the assessment tools accepted by CDP Water security program, together with a water risk analysis service provided by a risk management consulting company. Water risk includes the drought risk due to plant location in an area of high water stress.

There are five sites with water-related risks: Dalian and Shanghai in China, Okayama in Japan, San Ramon, California in the United States and Bekasi in Indonesia, withdrawing 280,000m3 in total in fiscal 2021, making 23% of the Group's withdrawals. These sites have not yet received instructions from administrative authorities to reduce the amount of water withdrawals or to improve quality of discharged water. However, the sites are voluntarily working to preserve water resources, taking preparatory measures for business continuity.
